External events don't have to be a huge gala or tournament...

In March 2006, a little boy named Taylor had his birthday. In lieu of gifts, Taylor asked everyone who attended his party make a donation to Make-A-Wish. Taylor's mother Brandi thanked everyone for participating:

"I just wanted to say thanks again to all of you for making donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We went there today and took our poster from the party and our donations. I must admit, I was a little nervous about doing this different kind of thing at a birthday party - how would it go with other children and parents, how it would go for Taylor. Well, let me assure you, I was very touched by this experience and very enthusiastic about doing it again. Both Taylor and Bailey so enjoyed visiting with all the staff at Make-A- Wish - they were so so very kind, they told Taylor a little about the wishes they grant, and they allowed both children to pick a surprise from their "wish closet" and take home a Make-A-Wish teddy bear. I am telling you, I was very close to tears, I was very proud of Taylor, and both kids left feeling great and excited. I can't say enough thanks to you for doing this for Taylor, and I wanted to assure you that not only did your donation go for a very worthy cause, but you helped teach my child today a very important life lesson. Thank you SO SO SO much for that! You truly made his birthday quite memorable."
