Step-by-Step
Wish Process
Many people
ask, "How does a wish happen?"
Regardless of the type of wish, Make-A-Wish
follows the same process:
STEP ONE: If the referral source
is not the child’s doctor, the family physician
is contacted for authorization and confirmation
that the child meets the medical criteria for
a wish.
STEP TWO: When we receive medical authorization, we tell the family the good news, and assign a team of two Wish Volunteers to the child.
The Wish Volunteers arrange to visit the family.
STEP THREE: During their visit, the Wish Volunteers have one very important responsibility: to help a child identify one heartfelt wish. A second wish is also determined (in the event that the first one is not approved by the child's doctor or is one of the few wishes our chapter cannot grant).
STEP
FOUR: Our office contacts the child’s doctor to get approval that the wish is safe and appropriate for the child’s
medical condition.
STEP FIVE: Once we receive medical approval, the Wish Volunteers will contact the family again and begin the magical work of making a wish happen. The Wish Volunteers will stay in touch with the family as they plan the wish.
With the assistance of Make-A-Wish staff, Wish Volunteers make the wish happen, including planning itineraries, coordinating logistics, seeking in-kind donations and adding those special touches to make the wish as magical an experience for the child and family as possible!
STEP SIX: Wish Day! On the wish day itself, the child and his or her family just sit back and watch the magic unfold! We try to leave no stone unturned, ensuring that the only thing left for them to do is to simply enjoy every single moment of the wish experience!
